Understand the PR Size Metric Template

The PR size metric template calculates the average number of lines added and lines deleted among all merged PRs. The standard PR size average is from 250 to 400 lines changed but may vary based on the team’s habits and codebase maturity.

How to Interpret the PR Size Metric Template

The PR size metric template helps evaluate if time is spread properly across the software development lifecycle. An excessively low average of this metric may indicate poor scoping, ultimately leading to longer review and merge time. A high average may indicate that issues should be broken into smaller work units to facilitate the workflow. Also, too much variation in this metric could be a sign of a team's change of habits or a sign of distress.

Looking to Monitor Your Own PR Size?

As a software engineer, you may want to track this metric at an individual level to ensure assigned PRs are following good practices. This version of the template comes with a filter automatically applied to allow you to monitor your own PR Size.
